Stepwell Development Updates
We want to use this page to share what’s new with Stepwell and what our team is up to.
Our goal to bring visibility to Special Education monitoring starts with making sure that our own process is visible. From development updates to new partnership announcements, we want to make it clear what we are doing to help states and districts improve special education. While these updates won’t be as in-depth as our blog posts or press releases, we hope that they will provide insight into how we are thinking about IDEA compliance and special education monitoring.

What is visibility into a system without great data collection and reporting? This summer, the Stepwell team has been improving both of the review processes within Stepwell that require reporting, and the “invisible” actions within Stepwell that produce data. We know that there are times when you need to work with districts or teams with whom you are not familiar. You may need to conduct audits of the activities of entities who are being monitored. For your own improvement, it may be useful to review and understand your own own team’s activities. By having a single database that brings together the right information about all of these factors, you and your team can cover all the bases. How does your current reporting system look? Let us know! Find us on Facebook or send us an email.

One of the most important workflows in Stepwell’s site visit module is the Educational Benefit workflow. Stepwell provides site visit team members with a step-by-step process to document and evaluate whether selected students have received educational benefit from program participation and services over a three-year period. This workflow allows the team members to easily create individual and aggregate analyses of students’ educational benefit. We believe that this approach supports results by allowing districts to understand the kinds of results their planning and implementation of IEPs actually produces and by pointing out potential areas for improvement. Throughout the development of Stepwell, we have put quite a bit of time into the site visit module. Within the module there is a workflow to streamline the staff interview process. Site visit team members can use Stepwell’s online Staff Interview form to guide their interviews with selected general and special education staff members and special education service providers. The final summary gathers and displays the results to help team members evaluate LEA practices, policies, and procedures and verify information gathered from other sources. The Staff Interview workflow is just another part of how Stepwell is helping to improve special education monitoring, which will ultimately help to improve the quality of special education. Keep an eye out for the next installment of our five-part blog series!

The Stepwell team is in the beginning stages of preparing for the NASDSE conference in October. This week we also began work on a new podcast series, where we will invite guests to discuss the 10 essential elements of a results-driven accountability system. These podcasts will build on our five-part blog series. Don’t miss out on these important conversations! Sign up for our newsletter, and check back here next week for another update.

The Stepwell team has created one more demo video for you to check out! Stepwell’s IEP Implementation Review guides site visit team members through a focused record review form and an IEP parent interview form. These forms help determine whether selected students have received all of the services that are documented in their IEP. The generated summary of findings allows the LEA to see what is working, what isn’t working, and what needs to be done to take the step from compliance to results. Watch the demo video for a better understanding of what this process looks like in Stepwell.
